Indian Pink — Spigelia marilandica — (June 10, 2006) This beautiful exotic-looking plant is found trailside throughout the lower levels of the park. It contains a poisonous alkaloid and has been used as a de-wormer in the past. The name has nothing to do with its color (definitely not pink) but with the pointed serrations at the ends of the petals giving the appearance of having been trimmed by pinking shears. |
