  NurseLog_9601.jpg - This is a "nurse log" a vital element in old growth rainforest life. As old trees fall and begin to decay seeds of various organisms become lodged in the log and new life begins, sustained by the nutrients of the nursge log. Everything from grasses to immense Douglas fir trees may be found growing form these horizontal nurseries. This log was only about 3 feet in diameter, quite small in this land of giants.
