View of the Eagle Bluff B&B Prince Rupert's finest The tree across the road from the Eagle Bluff usually held about 4-5 eagles. Guardian of the beers The group (Charlie, Dave, Brad, Matt, Pam, JoAnne) assembles in front of the B&B to leave for seaplane port. Floatplanes at the port Entering the Khutz Inside the sanctuary. The Ocean Light II, a 71 ft. sailboat, our base of operations and our accommodations, is lower center The Ocean Light II Brad getting a few tips from Dave Another view of the scenic sanctuary area Four water falls. We went to the base of this mountain (the second fall from the left) to get ice for the onboard food storage chests. Just one of dozens of falls visible to us Beautiful scenery, but where were the bears? OK, my first encounter Our first Grizzly There was plenty of lush young grass that the bears enjoyed feeding on. The entire area looked as though it had been mown recently as almost all of the grass was squarely clipped off, and plenty of grass debris floated in all the channels. We got his attention. This bear was grazing in the lupines, which had just begun to bloom. Interested? Seated Grizzly Gettin' fat.
Actually this bear is quite skinny and is just beginning to recover. A foggy morning on the Khutzeymateen. Trees in an area surrounding a well-worn bear trail.
The Real Rain Forest! Lots of swimming and curious looks. The bears generally paid little attention to us as we remained passive and non-threatening. They were far more worried about being surprised by a larger bear and spent a significant part of the time with their backs turned to us as they scanned the forest for sounds, sights and scents that might warn them of the arrival of a more dominant bear.
